I’ve been involved in a variety of projects. The topics have ranged widely, but the common throughline is a commitment to designing learning environments (afterschool clubs, games, and cityscapes) and partnering with communities to iteratively improve and design new solutions (practical measures, organizational protocols, routines), creating new technologies (social media, community platforms, data dashboards) and studying the impacts of our designs. I have studied a variety of potential impacts of our sociotechnical systems including on student achievement, identity development, community social capital, online collaborative learning behaviors, and funds of knowledge.
I’m grateful that this ongoing research agenda combining participatory design, technology, education, and community partnerships has been supported by almost $16 million in funding thus far, from the: National Science Foundation, Institute of Education Sciences, Gates Foundation, Susan Crown Exchange, Dimon Family Foundation, Spencer Foundation, and New Schools Venture Fund.
